“Pope Francis’ successor will inherit a complex set of challenges, but we must never forget that guaranteeing the unity in charity of the Church is the specific charism of St Peter’s successor. Not infrequently, strongly charismatic Pontiffs have been succeeded by other more institutional ones, who have channelled the contribution of their predecessors, as St. Paul VI did in recent times after St. John XXIII by bringing the Second Vatican Council to a fruitful conclusion”. During the homily he gave at Mass in London’s Westminster Cathedral, the mother church of the British Catholic religion, the apostolic nuncio to Great Britain, Archbishop Miguel Maury Buendía, outlined the profile of the next Pope. “He should be”, he said, “a man of the people, wise, with pastoral impetus and diplomatic finesse”. The Primate too, Vincent Nichols, who will take part in the conclave as from today, in a podcast distributed by the Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales, spoke of the qualities the new Pontiff should have. “I think the new Pope should have St. Paul’s dramatic voice in proclaiming the Gospel as well as St Peter’s consistency and ability to take decisions and say no”, the Archbishop of Westminster said. “In other words, be able to say no without breaking the ties of communion of the Church. I have always thought that in the Catholic Church authority is expressed by being able to say no but at the same time by giving a hug, and these two traits are very important in the Supreme Pontiff who is in charge of taking very important decisions”.
