As wildfires start to break out in many countries across Europe, partly induced by the high temperatures that are troubling the continent, EU firefighters have started to fight fires on the place through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. Bulgarian firefighters – the EU Commission reported – joined forces with their Greek counterparts in the Chalcidice peninsula, in Greece, to fight this week’s fires. Rumanian firefighters stationed in southern France supported the local French teams in responding to a fire near Perpignan. Such examples are part of the preparation for the EU’s summer wildfires, “with almost 650 firefighters from 14 European countries strategically positioned in key high-risk locations in France, Greece, Portugal, and Spain. They will boost the number of firefighters in each country.”. In addition, 22 firefighting aircrafts and 4 helicopters have been stationed in 10 member states to step in, if needed. Coordinated and co-funded by the Common Civil Protection Mechanism, such resources “will help mitigate risks and enable a faster crisis response”.
