Today, the EU is celebrating the first “European Day of Safe Travel Abroad”, an initiative aiming “to raise awareness of the importance of being well prepared and informed when travelling outside of the European Union”. Such Day places emphasis on the EU citizens’ right to consular protection when they travel abroad. “If EU citizens have problems, i.e. loss of passport or natural catastrophes, while they are outside of the EU, they can contact the embassy or consulate of any member state of the EU and receive assistance, even if their own country is not represented”, the EU Commission pointed out in a release. Michael McGrath, Commissioner for Democracy and Justice, stated: “Today, we celebrate the first European Day of Safe Travel Abroad. Travelling enriches our lives, and it is reassuring to know that, as EU citizens, we are protected by our right to consular protection”. The European Commission and the member states are committed to supporting EU citizens who travel abroad and making sure “they are aware of their rights and the assistance available to them”. Further details about consular protection  pursuant to EU law and the assistance of the civil protection mechanism  of the European Union to consular assistance are available online.
