The 2005 “Key figures on the EU in the world” has been published online by Eurostat, the European statistics bureau, to capture “a full portrait of the European Union in relation to other parts of the world”. It is 88 pages of numbers grouped into 3 chapters: people and society (features of the population, health, education, job market, lifestyle and digital society), economy and trade (economic framework and indicators, international trade, tourism, research and development), environment and natural resources (including figures about transport and energy). The EU figures are compared with the rest of the world. So, with its population of 448 million the EU accounts for 5.5% of the world’s population (more than the USA with a population of 343 million), with a median age of 44.5 (and the publication mentions that Italy would rank in the top 5 countries with the highest median age if it were not compared with the European median age), but with a life expectancy at birth of 81.5 years, 8.3 years longer than the global median age. The EU accounts for 14.7% of the global GDP, in third place after China and the United States, while its greenhouse gas emissions amount to 6.7% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions (in 1990 they amounted to 14.8%). Then, the survey found that 40.3% of the world’s tourists go to the European Union. More figures can be easily found here.
