The Archdiocese of Munich and Freising is “deeply upset” by the alleged attack that happened during a strike organised by the Ver.Di trade union in Munich, when a car drove into a crowd of demonstrators. “I am shocked and horrified at this horrible accident in which people have become victims of arbitrary violence in a public space. We do not know yet what the driver’s reasons are. My prayers go to the victims and their families, and I thank the emergency services for their fast rescue”, Cardinal Reinhard Marx, Archbishop of Munich and Freising, stated. The car, driven by a 24-year-old Afghan asylum seeker, after overtaking the police’s escort vehicles, drove into and injured at least about thirty people, two of them seriously. Victims include several children who were accompanying their parents in the march. Police confirmed that at least one gunshot was fired by the police escort agents that accompanied the rally, in the attempt to stop the attacker’s car.
