Once the “Royal Assent”, that is, the final approval by King Charles, is given, the legislation allowing assisted suicide on the Isle of Man – a British autonomous territory in the Irish Sea – will come into effect. This is the first time a measure paving the way for the end-of-life option in the British Isles has been passed, although similar laws are currently being debated by Westminster Parliament, the Scottish Parliament and even the Parliament of the Channel Island of Jersey. Indeed, the upper house of parliament, the so-called “Legislative Council”, has given the final approval to the legislation, which has been amended in recent weeks by several amendments proposed by the “House of Keys”, the lower house. The new legislation will allow terminally ill, mentally competent adults, who have been resident on the Isle of Man for five years and are expected to die within 12 months or less, to opt for assisted suicide, provided that their decision has been verified by two doctors. The legislation, which guarantees the right of doctors to conscientious objection, will enter into force by 2027.
