Mgr. Rui Valério, Patriarch of Lisbon, announced that the Portuguese capital is hosting “special” pilgrimages for homeless people as part of the Jubilee Year 2025. “Along the way, we listen to a reading of God’s Word and pray the Rosary about a dozen times”, Mgr. Valério reported. “When they reach their destination, they are proposed an activity that leads the homeless to discover the meaning of a few elements: the last time it was the meaning of water in the light of the Bible”, the Patriarch explained. Rui Valério also spoke of the parish for the homeless, which he had said he was going to create. “We have been working hard at it and we are also reflecting whether we should call it a parish or a quasi-parish or an institution, but that is not so important now”, the Patriarch stated. “What we are really called to do now is raising public awareness of the fact that our homeless brothers and sisters, as well as needing support in terms of food, clothes, medicines, housing, have another dimension, which is crucial, and that is the spiritual dimension”, Mgr. Valério went on. In October 2024, the Patriarch of Lisbon had announced that a project for the homeless “will take shape and will happen in the Holy Year 2025”.
