The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, is on an official visit to Israel and the Gaza Strip. She is the first European leader to enter Gaza in more than a decade. Her crossing of the border at a crucial moment in time – a statement reads – is meant to highlight the EU’s critical role in supporting humanitarian efforts in Gaza (notably through the EUBAM operation) and the EU’s commitment to continue supporting the ceasefire and hostage exchange deal. Today, Metsola had a meeting in Jerusalem with the Speaker of the Knesset, Amir Ohana, and the Israeli Minister for Foreign Affairs, Gideon Sa’ar.

She then travelled to the Kerem Shalom Border Crossing Point to visit the humanitarian operations, and met with the agents of the European Union Border Assistance Mission (EUBAM) before visiting the site of the Nova Festival. In the evening, she will travel back to Jerusalem to meet with the President of the State of Israel, Isaac Herzog. Tomorrow, the president is scheduled to meet with the Palestinian leadership in Ramallah, with the Secretary-General of the Executive Committee of the Palestinian Liberation Organisation, Hussein al-Sheikh, and with Sakharov Prize 2024 Nominee, Reem Al Hajajra, Director of Women of the Sun.
