A commemoration of the “the strength and resilience of refugees, who have left their homes not by choice, but due to conflict, violence, persecution or human rights violations”. This is the meaning of World Refugee Day according to the message released by the European Commission and the EU High Representative today. A record number of people, over 122 million, have been forcibly displaced worldwide. The EU receives and supports millions of refugees, the statement reads, reaffirming “the EU as a safe haven for those in need”. Besides, the EU is also the world’s leading donor, responding to crises such as those in Sudan and the Middle East. The EU’s efforts focus on “safeguarding refugee rights”, the statement goes on to say, “ensuring access to essential services, and offering durable solutions” such as “assisted voluntary return, local integration and resettlement”. Global cooperation and solidarity, as well as support to the work of international organisations, are key to ensure the protection of refugees worldwide, according to the statement, that ends with a pledge: “The EU will continue to play its role on the global stage and uphold refugees’ rights, in line with EU and international law”.
