“Everyone’s vote counts”, the Greek and Roman Catholic Bishops of the Rumanian Church write in a call made a few days before the second round of the presidential election. On Sunday 18th May, Romanian citizens will be called to appoint a new head of State, after the cancellation of the presidential election by the Romanian Constitutional Court last December due to problems with the “fairness and lawfulness of the election process”. With 53.21% of voters turning up on 4th May and with the two candidates for the runoff having an equal chance, according to the latest polls, there’s the risk the future of the country may be decided by few voters. “Now more than ever, the presidential election concerns the future of the country, its wellbeing and our freedom depend on us all! That’s why we urge you to vote”, the Bishops write. Next Sunday, Romania’s presidency will be vied over by the nationalist George Simion and the centrist Nicusor Dan, but many people describe the election as a choice between East and West Europe. in their message, the Romanian Bishops speak of next Sunday’s vote as of a “personal responsibility for the fate of the country”, on which “the good operation of our deeply European society depends”; “our future, freedom of expression and religion” depend on the results. “We are all in the same boat”, “no one can be saved alone”, the Bishops added, quoting Pope Francis.
