Spain floods: Valencia’s Brothers of St John of God’s social service on the frontline in aids

“Faced with the tragedy caused by Dana we are experienced, solidarity makes its way”. With these words, the Spanish province of the Order of St John of God – Fatebenefratelli is responding, in Valencia and in all the flooded municipalities, with “close, face-to-face solidarity”, which has its most effective embodiment in the “people helping people” campaign, launched on the institution’s webpage. Valencia’s Serveis Socials Sant Joan de Déu social service has specifically got geared to cover the first basic needs, such as food, clothing, toiletries and protective items. The Centre’s professionals keep walking or riding to the flooded cities, such as Torrent, Aldaia, Massanasa, Picanya, Catarroja, la Torre and Paiporta, the Centre’s website states. “Our work consists in helping the people who need it most, especially keeping assisting the homeless of Valencia in the shelters”, the Management of the Serveis Socials announces on its website. At this first stage and in coordination with the Municipality of Valencia and the Generalitat Valenciana, the Centre has also taken upon itself to provide the affected people, including many employees of the health and social care centre and their families living in the flooded areas, with emotional and psychological support. Also in coordination with the municipal authorities of the flooded villages, the Serveis Socials Sant Joan de Déu is helping to handle the donated mattresses, bedsheets and other items to better equip the emergency centres. Lastly, a fundraising campaign has been started too.
