Mgr. Luis Argüello, President of the Episcopal Conference of Spain and Archbishop of Valladolid, expressed support for “the acceptance and fair distribution” all over Spain of migrant children coming to the Canary Islands. Actually, at a press conference this week, the Spanish prelate stated that “the Church endorses this measure so that it may be taken on the basis of human dignity and the common good”. Argüello mentioned that the Church has historically been cooperative with the two dioceses of the Canary Islands, which are making “huge efforts” to assist migrants. In this respect, he listed three principles that are fundamental to address this phenomenon: the right not to emigrate, the fight against the mafias involved in human trafficking, and the recognition of migrants’ dignity. The first principle, the right not to emigrate, “involves an analysis of the conditions in the native countries and the promotion of the European Union’s commitment to improving the situation in these regions”. Secondly, he emphasised the need to fight the mafias that are involved in human trafficking and that, as reported, “profit from human suffering”. Lastly, once migrants are in Spain already, he insisted on the importance of recognising their dignity and properly welcoming them. When signing the protocol whereby the Archdiocese of Valladolid joined the Rehabitare programme (aiming to increase the community’s public pool of social housing and support the population’s social inclusion in rural areas by salvaging abandoned buildings owned by the Municipality), mgr. Argüello pointed out that the Church, through a number of organisations, is already proactively involved in welcoming and cooperating with migrants.
