“I welcome this initiative by Muslim and Jewish leaders to work together for the common good. In my experience, developing friendships and close relationships between faith leaders is an essential part of encouraging social cohesion and good interfaith relationships more widely in this country”. With these words, contained in a statement issued by the UK Bishops’ Conference, the Catholic Primate of England and Wales, Cardinal Vincent Nichols, welcomed the new agreement called The Drumlanrig Accord, signed by the UK’s most senior Muslim and Jewish leaders and presented to King Charles at Buckingham Palace. It is an agreement of historic significance as it is the first time that representatives from eleven major Muslim and Jewish denominations have come together to create a future built on shared values, reconciliation and social responsibility. The new agreement is named after Drumlanrig Castle in Scotland, where, for three days, from 14 to 16 January, British Imam Sayed Razawi brought together Britain’s most prominent Jewish and Muslim leaders. The three-day meeting was only the last in a year-long series of meetings. The agreement provides for concrete cooperation initiatives between the two religions and champions the principle of “disagreeing agreeably, ensuring that differences do not lead to division but instead foster deeper understanding”.
