“We are deeply concerned that Parliament has rejected an amendment which would have allowed hospices and care homes not to participate in any way in assisted suicide”. This statement was made by the Bishops of England and Wales to comment on the end of the so-called “Report Stage” of the assisted-suicide bill in Westminster Parliament last week, i.e. the discussion of amendments before the last, final vote in mid-June. “If this bill should pass”, the Bishops wrote, “we have serious concerns about the ability of Catholic hospices and care homes to function effectively and continue delivering high-quality palliative care. We are also concerned that people will find it difficult to find institutions where they can feel safe”. In addition, the English Bishops explained their reservations about an amendment that would give a wide range of professionals the option not to participate in assisted suicide as “experience shows that even where medical professionals are granted conscientious objection to assisted suicide, their ability to opt out is later restricted as access to provision takes precedence”. The statement ended with a call to Catholics and to all people of goodwill, urging them to contact their MPs and ask them to vote against a bill that “fundamentally damages society by causing irreversible harm and that Parliament did not spend proper time debating”.
