“With so many in the world suffering the impacts of poverty, climate change and conflict, not least in Ukraine, Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo, cuts to international aid removes a lifeline for many of our poorest sisters and brothers”. With these words, in a release posted by the Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales, Bishop Stephen Wright, President of CAFOD, the Bishops’ Conference’s official aid and development agency, criticises the decision taken by the British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, to cut aid to developing country from 0.5% to 0.3% of the Gross Domestic Product to increase defence spending to 2.5%. “Decisions made in the UK have very human consequences around the globe”, Bishop Wright writes on. “Families unable to grow food because of the climate crisis, children not able to go to school, and people going untreated and unvaccinated. It makes the world less safe for all of us”. In his release, the Bishop points out that “the government shouldn’t be balancing the books at the expense of the poorest communities around the world” and informs the devotees that on CAFOD’s website there is a very easy system to send a message to their MPs to protest against Prime Minister’s Starmer’s cuts to aid to the poorer countries.
