“How beautiful it is that Eastern and Western Christians are celebrating Easter on the same day in this Jubilee Year! We can bear witness together to Jesus’ Resurrection and love”, Mgr Iosif Pal, Roman Catholic Bishop of Timișoara, Romania, wrote in his Easter message. Indeed, for Christians in Timișoara, celebrating Easter together is not just a special event. On Easter night, the Roman Catholic and Serbian Orthodox communities will meet on Union Square, where their cathedrals stand facing each other. “We will greet each other and sing together a song known in our languages, then we will return to our cathedral to finish the Easter Vigil and the Orthodox will enter their cathedral to begin the celebration of the Lord’s Resurrection”, Mgr Pal explained to SIR news agency. And on Easter Monday, there will be an ecumenical procession at 3pm, with the participation of Roman Catholics, Orthodox and Protestants. The event will begin at the Orthodox Church with a homily by Mgr Pal and will then continue at the Orthodox Metropolis, where the Metropolitan will address a greeting. “The first Christians could not keep the news of Jesus’ Resurrection to themselves; they wanted to tell everyone that He had risen, that He is alive”, explained the Bishop of Timișoara in his Easter message. Finally, he expressed the hope “that we too can bear witness to the work of the Risen Jesus, who lives with us and acts in our lives and in the lives of those around us”.
