One year after the Summit of Heads of State and Government in Reykjavik in 2023, the Foreign Affairs Ministers of the Council of Europe’s 46 Member States will meet in Strasbourg on 17 May. On the agenda are the measures that the Council of Europe continues to take in response to the aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, the implementation of the Declaration adopted in 2023, and the adoption of a Framework Convention on artificial intelligence, human rights, democracy and the rule of law. The Council of Europe’s work on its core themes will also be assessed, with a particular focus on initiatives related to the fight against the death penalty, education and culture, civil society and youth participation, human rights in the digital age, migration and human trafficking, the protection of journalists and the fight against disinformation, anti-discrimination and inclusion, gender equality and the environment. The cooperation between the Council of Europe and the European Union is also on the agenda. The meeting will mark the end of Liechtenstein’s Presidency of the Committee of Ministers, which is the Council of Europe’s decision-making body, and the start of Lithuania’s six-month presidency, with a concluding report by Liechtenstein Minister Dominique Hasler and a programmatic statement by Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė. On the eve of the meeting, a ceremony will mark the 75th anniversary of the Council of Europe.
