The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the President of the European Council, António Costa, have met with the President of Ukraine, Volodymir Zelenskyy, on the sidelines of the Security Conference in Munich today. Presidents Von der Leyen and Costa “committed to a continued and stable support to Ukraine – an official statement reads – until a just, comprehensive and lasting peace is reached”. They underlined that “only such a peace would lead to a sovereign and prosperous Ukraine and guarantee Ukraine’s and Europe’s security”. During their talks with Zelenskyy, the two European leaders expressed “the willingness to put Ukraine in a position of strength ahead of any future negotiations and that Ukraine is provided with strong security guarantees”. Of course, these reassurances come in the wake of Trump’s recent, ambiguous moves with Putin. Von der Leyen and Costa then stressed “the need for Europeans to increase their defence spending and strengthen their defence capabilities and help reinforce the Ukrainian armed forces”. Von der Leyen and Costa finally reaffirmed their willingness “to step up the work to accelerate the accession process of Ukraine to the European Union”.
