“In determining our electoral choices, we search always to uphold the sanctity of life, protect the vulnerable, support and strengthen families, promote the common good, and foster a just society where all Australians can thrive”. This is the call made by the Australian Bishops in their statement “Called to Bring Hope in the Year of Jubilee”, ahead of the Federal election on May 3rd. The document, inspired by “Pilgrims of Hope”, the theme chosen by Pope Francis for Jubilee 2025, calls all Catholics to be responsibly committed to democratic life. “The Jubilee reminds us that voting is not just a civic duty but an opportunity to advance the common good and pave the way for hope”, the statement reads. Archbishop Timothy Costelloe, President of the Australian Bishops’ Conference, urges to “commit ourselves to conscientious voting, carefully considering the facts and supporting policies that improve the lives of all, especially the most vulnerable and disadvantaged”. The Bishops emphasise the importance of raising awareness through reason, Sacred Scripture and Church teachings, insisting that “conscience is our inner guide” and “we have a duty to follow it faithfully”.
